Dresser Size Guide: Standard Dimensions and What Fits Your Bedroom
A standard double dresser is 30 to 36 inches (76 to 91 cm) tall, 56 to 66 inches (142 to 168 cm) wide and 18 to 22 inches (46 to 56 cm) deep. A tall chest of drawers trades width for height at 48 to 60 inches tall and 30 to 40 inches wide. Which one fits depends on two clearances: 36 inches in front to open the drawers and at least 30 inches between the dresser and the bed. Here are the numbers for every dresser type, plus the TV and mirror rules.

Standard dresser dimensions by type
| Type | Height | Width | Depth | Drawers | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Double dresser (horizontal) | 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) | 56 to 66 in (142 to 168 cm) | 18 to 22 in (46 to 56 cm) | 6 to 9 | Main bedroom; TV or mirror on top |
| Standard dresser | 30 to 34 in (76 to 86 cm) | 40 to 55 in (102 to 140 cm) | 16 to 20 in (41 to 51 cm) | 4 to 6 | Guest room, one person |
| Tall chest / chest of drawers | 48 to 60 in (122 to 152 cm) | 30 to 40 in (76 to 102 cm) | 16 to 20 in (41 to 51 cm) | 5 to 7 | Small rooms, narrow walls |
| Long low dresser | 26 to 30 in (66 to 76 cm) | 72 to 84 in (183 to 213 cm) | 16 to 20 in (41 to 51 cm) | 6 to 12 | Under a window or a wall-mounted TV |
| Gentleman’s chest / combo | 50 to 60 in (127 to 152 cm) | 40 to 48 in (102 to 122 cm) | 18 to 20 in (46 to 51 cm) | Drawers + cabinet | Hanging space where there is no closet |
Heights above 36 inches (91 cm) stop being a surface you use; you cannot comfortably see the top of a 48 inch chest, so it is for storage only. Heights under 30 inches put the top at knee-to-hip level, which is fine under a window but awkward for a mirror.
Clearance: the two measurements that decide the size
- 36 inches (91 cm) in front of the dresser to pull a drawer fully open and stand at it. Drawers are usually 14 to 18 inches deep, and you need room for your body behind them.
- 30 inches (76 cm) minimum between the dresser and the side of the bed; 36 inches if that gap is also the path to the door.
- At the foot of the bed, keep 36 inches between the footboard and the dresser front so two people can pass.
- Door swing: a dresser beside a door needs the full arc of the door clear, typically 30 to 36 inches.
The quick check: wall length minus 6 inches = maximum dresser width if nothing else sits on that wall, and room width minus bed width minus 66 inches tells you whether a dresser fits opposite the bed with both clearances.
Which dresser size for which bedroom
| Bedroom size | Bed | Dresser that fits |
|---|---|---|
| 9 x 10 ft (2.7 x 3 m) | Full / double | One tall chest, 30 to 36 in wide |
| 10 x 12 ft (3 x 3.7 m) | Queen | Standard dresser 40 to 55 in wide, or tall chest + nightstands |
| 12 x 12 ft (3.7 x 3.7 m) | Queen or king | Double dresser 56 to 66 in wide opposite the bed |
| 13 x 15 ft and up (4 x 4.6 m+) | King | Double dresser plus a tall chest, or a long low dresser |
Drawer count: how much storage you actually need
Plan on three drawers per person for everyday clothes (tops, bottoms, underwear and socks), plus one for seasonal items. A couple is comfortable with a six-drawer double dresser; a single adult with a lot of knitwear wants the same. Drawer height matters as much as count: 5 to 6 inch (13 to 15 cm) drawers hold folded shirts and socks, 8 to 10 inch (20 to 25 cm) drawers hold sweaters and jeans. A chest with five shallow drawers stores less than a double dresser with six deep ones.
Putting a TV on the dresser
A dresser is a fine TV stand if the proportions work. The TV should be at least 6 inches (15 cm) narrower than the dresser, so a 55 inch TV (about 48 inches wide) needs a dresser 54 inches or wider, and a 65 inch TV (about 57 inches wide) needs 63 inches. Screen centre should land at seated or reclining eye level from the bed, usually 42 to 48 inches from the floor, which is why a 30 to 34 inch dresser works and a 48 inch chest does not. Dresser depth of 18 inches or more keeps the stand feet fully on the surface. For a dedicated piece see our TV stand size guide.
Hanging a mirror above a dresser
Hang the mirror so its bottom edge sits 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 cm) above the dresser top and its width is roughly two thirds of the dresser width. A 60 inch dresser pairs with a 36 to 42 inch mirror. If the dresser doubles as a vanity, the centre of the mirror needs to land near standing eye level, 57 to 62 inches from the floor; a mirror that is too tall will cut your head off. Taller dressers (36 inches) suit shorter mirrors; low dressers can carry a mirror up to 40 inches tall.
Dresser and nightstand heights together
Nothing in a bedroom has to match exactly, but the eye reads heights. Nightstands sit level with the mattress top (usually 24 to 28 inches); a double dresser at 30 to 34 inches sits a little above them, which looks intentional. A 48 inch chest next to a 24 inch nightstand looks like a mistake unless the chest is on a different wall. The full nightstand rules are in the nightstand and side table height guide.
Safety: anchor anything over 30 inches tall
Tall chests and any dresser in a child’s room should be anchored to the wall with the supplied strap or an anti-tip kit. A chest with all its drawers open shifts its centre of gravity forward, and a climbing toddler can pull one over. Anchoring takes ten minutes and two screws into a stud.
Frequently asked questions
What is the standard dresser height?
30 to 36 inches (76 to 91 cm) for a double dresser; tall chests run 48 to 60 inches (122 to 152 cm).
How wide is a standard double dresser?
56 to 66 inches (142 to 168 cm), with 60 inches the most common.
How much space do I need in front of a dresser?
36 inches (91 cm) to open the drawers and stand at them; 30 inches at an absolute minimum between the dresser and the bed.
Can a 65 inch TV sit on a dresser?
Yes, if the dresser is at least 63 inches wide and 18 inches deep, and no taller than about 34 inches so the screen centre stays near eye level from the bed.
How high should a mirror hang above a dresser?
Bottom edge 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 cm) above the dresser top, mirror about two thirds of the dresser width.
Dresser or chest of drawers for a small bedroom?
A tall chest. It uses 30 to 40 inches of wall instead of 56 or more and stores nearly as much in deep drawers.
