Bar Stools

Measure your counter or bar from the floor. A 36in counter takes 24-26in counter stools; a 42in bar takes 28-30in bar stools. Leave 10-12in between the seat and the underside of the top.

Allow 24-28in of counter width per stool including elbow room. A 4ft counter fits two comfortably, 6ft fits three, 8ft fits four. Leave about 6in from a corner to the first stool.

Backless stools tuck fully under the counter and look minimal — best for occasional use. Backed stools are more comfortable for longer sitting but need more clearance. Swivel models make getting on and off easier.

Stools with a cushioned seat, a back and a footrest suit extended use; minimal backless or hard-seat stools are better for short stays. Adjustable gas-lift stools add ergonomic flexibility for shared counters.

Most take about 15-20 minutes each — attaching the seat, any backrest and the footrest to the base. Adjustable gas-lift stools take roughly 20-25 minutes. The hardware needed typically ships with the piece.

Fit felt pads on the legs, or rubber caps for frequently moved stools, and replace them yearly as they wear. Stools with built-in foot rings or rubber feet are gentler on hard floors.
