Layer three jobs: ambient (a ceiling fixture for overall light), task (lamps, pendants or sconces where you read, cook or work) and accent (picture or wall lights for mood). Most rooms need at least two of the three layers to feel balanced rather than flat.

Chandeliers and flush mounts for living and bedroom ceilings; pendants over dining tables and kitchen islands; sconces in hallways and bathrooms; table and floor lamps for living rooms and reading corners; outdoor wall lights for entries, patios and paths.

Add the room's length and width in feet — that number, in inches, is a good fixture diameter. Hang pendants and chandeliers about 7ft off the floor in open rooms, or 30-36in above a dining table or island surface.

Only fixtures rated “damp” (covered porches, bathroom ceilings) or “wet” (exposed spots, shower zones) are safe in moisture-prone areas. Look for a damp or wet note in the product description, and message us if you're unsure about a specific fixture before installing.

Swapping a fixture on an existing ceiling or wall box is DIY-friendly with the breaker off. Heavy chandeliers may need a braced box. Brand-new wiring, or relocating a fixture, requires a licensed electrician for safety and code.

For ceilings 10ft and above, choose larger fixtures (24in+ diameter) or chandeliers with adjustable chain or rod length. Add roughly 3in of drop for each extra foot of ceiling height above 8ft so the fixture stays in proportion.
