Lighting Installation Guide

This guide covers how to install the main types of Lighom light fixtures. The steps are general and apply to most fixtures of each type — always follow the specific instructions included in your product’s box. For any hardwired fixture we recommend a licensed electrician.

Before you start — every fixture

  1. Turn off the power at the breaker for that circuit, and use a voltage tester to confirm the wires are dead before touching them.
  2. Remove the old fixture and note the wiring: black = live, white = neutral, green or bare copper = ground.
  3. Check all parts against the box contents on your product page. Missing something? Email service@lighom.com before you begin.

1. Flush & Semi-Flush Ceiling Lights

Tools: screwdriver, voltage tester, ladder, wire nuts. About 20–30 minutes.

  1. Turn off power and confirm with a tester.
  2. Attach the mounting bracket to the ceiling electrical box.
  3. Connect the wires: live–live (black–black), neutral–neutral (white–white), ground–ground (green/bare); secure each with a wire nut.
  4. Tuck the wires into the box, then mount the fixture body and secure it.
  5. Install the bulbs, restore power, and test.

Tip: the electrical box must support the fixture’s weight. In older homes without a ground wire, follow local code.

2. Chandeliers

Tools: as above, plus a helper to hold the fixture. About 45–90 minutes.

  1. Turn off power and confirm.
  2. Attach the mounting bracket. Confirm the box is fixture/fan-rated for the chandelier’s weight.
  3. Adjust the rod or chain to your target height (over a dining table: 30–36″ above the tabletop; over a walkway: bottom at least 7 ft off the floor), then thread the wire through.
  4. Connect live/neutral/ground, then secure the canopy to the ceiling.
  5. Add crystals/shades (wear gloves) and bulbs, restore power, and test.

Tip: for a sloped ceiling use a sloped-ceiling adapter.

3. Pendant & Kitchen Island Lights

About 30–45 minutes per pendant.

  1. Turn off power and confirm.
  2. Attach the bracket.
  3. Set the cord length — 30–36″ above a countertop; for multiple pendants space them 24–30″ apart and keep 12″ in from each island end.
  4. Connect live/neutral/ground and secure the canopy.
  5. Install bulbs, restore power, and test.

4. Wall Sconces

About 20–30 minutes.

  1. Turn off power and confirm.
  2. Attach the mounting bracket to the wall electrical box.
  3. Connect live/neutral/ground.
  4. Secure the fixture to the wall, add the shade and bulb, restore power, and test.

Plug-in models need no wiring — just mount and plug in (great for renters). Typical heights: beside a mirror ~60–66″ to center; bedside ~30″ above the nightstand.

5. Ceiling Fans

Requires a fan-rated electrical box — this is essential. About 60–120 minutes.

  1. Turn off power and confirm.
  2. Install or confirm a fan-rated box, then attach the mounting bracket.
  3. Assemble the fan body and downrod (a sloped ceiling requires a downrod) and hang it on the bracket.
  4. Connect the motor and light wiring (including any remote receiver).
  5. Attach the blades, add the light kit and bulbs, restore power, and test all speeds and the reverse switch.

Tip: blades should sit at least 7 ft off the floor. Wobble usually means an unbalanced blade — use the included balancing clip.

6. Outdoor & Wall Lanterns

About 30–45 minutes.

  1. Turn off power and confirm.
  2. Attach the weatherproof base and apply the gasket or a bead of silicone to seal against the wall.
  3. Connect live/neutral/ground and weatherproof the connections.
  4. Secure the fixture, add an outdoor-rated bulb, restore power, and test.

Rating matters: use a Damp-rated fixture for covered areas and a Wet-rated fixture where it’s exposed to rain.

When to call an electrician

Every hardwired fixture involves mains electricity. Hire a licensed electrician if you are not comfortable working with wiring, or if your home has no ground wire, aluminum wiring, or an overloaded circuit. Ceiling fans and heavy chandeliers must be mounted to a fixture-rated (fan-rated) box.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an electrician? For hardwired fixtures we recommend one. Plug-in sconces and lamps need no wiring.

Which wire goes where? Black (live) to black, white (neutral) to white, green or bare copper (ground) to ground.

How high should I hang it? Over a dining table 30–36″ above the top; pendants over an island 30–36″ above the counter; a fixture over a walkway at least 7 ft off the floor. Use our free size calculator for exact numbers.

My ceiling is sloped — can I still install it? Yes, with a sloped-ceiling adapter (chandeliers) or a downrod (fans).
