Coffee Table Size Guide: How Big Should Yours Be?

Coffee Table Size Guide: How Big Should Yours Be?

Most coffee tables are bought by eye and returned by tape measure. There are only three numbers that matter, and once you have them the choice narrows fast.

1. Length: two-thirds of your sofa

The table should be about two-thirds the length of the sofa it faces. An 84-inch sofa wants a table around 56 inches. Shorter than half and the table looks like an afterthought; longer than the sofa and the room reads crowded. Measure the sofa itself, not the wall it sits against.

2. Height: level with the seat, or an inch below

Sit down and measure from the floor to the top of your sofa cushion. Your coffee table should land within an inch of that number - usually 16 to 18 inches. Taller and you reach up for your drink; much lower and you reach down, which is worse. Ottoman-style and drum tables often run lower, around 14 inches. That works if your sofa is low too.

3. Gap: 18 inches to walk, 12 to reach

Leave 18 inches between the sofa edge and the table if people walk past. If nobody walks through, 12 inches is enough and puts your drink within reach without leaning.

What changes for a round table

Round tables ignore the two-thirds rule - use diameter instead. A 36-inch round suits most 3-seat sofas; 42 to 48 inches works with a sectional. They are the right call in a small room because there are no corners to walk into, and they sit better against an L-shaped sofa where a rectangle fights the angle. Browse round coffee tables from 24 to 48 inches.

What changes for glass

A glass top makes a small room read larger because you see the rug straight through it. That also means you can size up slightly without the room feeling heavy. See glass coffee tables in tempered, smoked and frosted finishes.

What changes for marble

Stone is visually heavy, so size down rather than up. A marble table at exactly two-thirds of the sofa will feel right; go larger and it dominates. See marble coffee tables with genuine stone and sintered stone tops.

When to use a nesting set instead

If you need surface area sometimes and floor space the rest of the time, a nesting set solves both. Size the largest piece by the two-thirds rule and let the smaller ones tuck underneath. See nesting coffee tables in two and three-piece sets.
