Furniture & Lighting Size Calculator
Enter your room and get the right size chandelier, ceiling fan, TV stand, coffee table, or dining table — with a scaled diagram, inch and centimeter output, and the exact formula behind every result. These are the same proportion rules interior designers work from.
What size chandelier do I need?
Formula: room length + width in feet = diameter in inches. Over a table, use ½–⅔ of the table width, hung 30–36″ above it.
What size ceiling fan do I need?
Blade span is matched to floor area. Keep blades 8–9 ft off the floor and ≥18″ from any wall.
What size TV stand do I need?
Shop TV stands →A 16:9 screen is ~0.87× its diagonal wide. The stand should always be wider than the TV — ideally a few inches past each edge.
What size coffee table do I need?
Shop coffee tables →Length ≈ ⅔ of the sofa; top within 1–2″ of the seat; leave 14–18″ of legroom.
What size dining table do I need?
Allow ~24″ of edge per person, plus 36″ of clearance on every side for chairs.
What size ceiling light do I need?
Same rule as a chandelier: room length + width in feet = fixture diameter in inches.
How many pendants over my island?
Space pendants evenly; each about half the island width; hang 30–36″ above the counter.
How high should a wall sconce be?
Shop wall sconces →Heights are measured to the center of the fixture from the floor.
What size vanity light do I need?
Shop vanity lighting →A bathroom light bar looks best at about ¾ of the mirror width, centered above it.
What height bar stool do I need?
Seat height = surface height − 10 to 12″. Counters ~36″, bars ~42″, tables ~30″.
What height nightstand do I need?
Shop nightstands →The top should sit roughly level with the mattress — within a couple inches either way.
What size console table do I need?
Behind a sofa, keep it a touch below the sofa back and about ¾ of its length.
What size rug do I need?
A rug that's too small makes a room feel smaller — leave a border of floor, not the reverse.
How high should I mount my TV?
Aim to put the center of the screen at your seated eye level (usually 40–45″).
How high should I hang art or a mirror?
Gallery standard hangs the center at 57–60″; above furniture, leave ~8″ of gap.
Chandelier diameter by room size
| Room size (ft) | Sum (L+W) | Recommended diameter |
|---|---|---|
| 10 × 10 | 20 | 20″ (51 cm) |
| 12 × 12 | 24 | 24″ (61 cm) |
| 12 × 14 | 26 | 26″ (66 cm) |
| 14 × 16 | 30 | 30″ (76 cm) |
| 16 × 18 | 34 | 34″ (86 cm) |
Ceiling fan blade span by floor area
| Room area | Blade span |
|---|---|
| Up to 75 sq ft | 29–36″ |
| 76–144 sq ft | 42–48″ |
| 145–225 sq ft | 48–54″ |
| 226–400 sq ft | 54–60″ |
| Over 400 sq ft | 60″+ or two fans |
Bar & counter stool seat height
| Surface height | Stool seat height |

| Dining table ~30″ | 18–20″ |
| Kitchen counter ~36″ | 24–26″ |
| Bar ~42″ | 28–30″ |
Standard hanging & mounting heights
| Item | Height from floor |
|---|---|
| Chandelier over dining table | 30–36″ above the tabletop |
| Pendants over island | 30–36″ above the counter |
| Wall sconce (center) | 60–66″ |
| Vanity light (center) | 75–80″ |
| Art / mirror (center) | 57–60″ |

Rug size by room
| Room | Rule of thumb |
|---|---|
| Living room | Front legs of all seating on the rug; 8–18″ of floor around the edges |
| Dining room | Table + 24″ on every side, so chairs stay on when pulled out |
| Bedroom | Under the lower ⅔ of the bed, 18–24″ past the sides and foot |
How each size is calculated
- Chandelier diameter: add the room's length and width in feet — that sum is the ideal diameter in inches. Over a dining table, size to the table instead (½–⅔ of its width), hung 30–36″ above the surface.
- Ceiling fan blade span: match span to floor area (see table). Rooms over 400 sq ft move air better with two fans than one oversized one.
- TV stand width: a 16:9 screen is ~0.87× its diagonal wide, so a 65″ TV is ~57″ wide; the stand should extend a few inches past each edge.
- Coffee table: length ≈ two-thirds of the sofa, top within 1–2″ of seat height, 14–18″ of legroom.
- Dining table: ~24″ of edge per person, plus 36″ of clearance on every side.
Frequently asked questions
What size chandelier for a 12×14 room?
Add the dimensions in feet: 12 + 14 = 26, so aim for ~26″ diameter, with the bottom at least 7 ft off the floor.
How many pendant lights over a kitchen island?
Space them evenly with about one pendant per 30–40″ of island — usually two over a 6-ft island and three over an 8–10-ft island — each roughly half the island's width and hung 30–36″ above the counter.
How high should a bar stool be for a 36-inch counter?
Subtract 10–12″ from the surface: a 36″ kitchen counter takes a 24–26″ counter stool, a 42″ bar takes a 28–30″ bar stool, and a 30″ table takes an 18–20″ stool.
How high do you hang a wall sconce?
Center it 60–66″ from the floor on a general wall, 60–72″ when flanking a mirror or bed, and 66–72″ in a hallway with one every 8–10 ft.
How high should a TV be mounted?
Put the center of the screen at your seated eye level — usually about 42″ from the floor — so the bottom edge lands roughly 24–30″ up for most TVs.
How high should I hang art or a mirror?
Gallery standard is to center the piece at 57–60″ from the floor. Over a sofa or console, drop it so the bottom sits about 8″ above the furniture instead.
How wide should a TV stand be for a 65 inch TV?
A 65″ TV is about 57″ wide, so the stand should be at least 57″ and ideally ~68″ for balance.
What size ceiling fan for a 200 sq ft room?
A 48–54″ blade span. Keep blades 8–9 ft off the floor and 18″+ from any wall.
How big should a coffee table be?
About two-thirds the length of your sofa, level with the seat cushions, with 14–18″ of space between.
What size dining table seats six?
Roughly 72 × 36″ rectangular, or a 54″-diameter round table — but leave 36″ of clearance all around.
