Makeup Vanity Size and Height Guide: Table, Stool and Mirror
A makeup vanity works when three heights agree. The table should be 28 to 31 inches (71 to 79 cm) tall, the stool seat 18 to 20 inches (46 to 51 cm), and the mirror centred at seated eye level, roughly 44 to 48 inches (112 to 122 cm) from the floor. Get those right and even a 32 inch wide vanity feels luxurious. This guide gives you every number, plus the width, depth, placement and lighting rules.

Vanity height: the three numbers
| Element | Standard measurement | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Vanity table height | 28 to 31 in (71 to 79 cm) | Same range as a desk; forearms rest flat while seated |
| Stool seat height | 18 to 20 in (46 to 51 cm) | Leaves 9 to 12 in (23 to 30 cm) of thigh clearance under the table |
| Knee clearance under table | 24 in (61 cm) minimum width, 9 to 12 in height | Drawers that drop below this block your legs |
| Mirror centre from floor | 44 to 48 in (112 to 122 cm) | Seated eye level for most adults |
| Mirror height | 20 to 30 in (51 to 76 cm) | Shows face and shoulders without leaning |
The relationship that matters is table height minus seat height = 9 to 12 inches. A 30 inch table with an 18 inch stool is the classic pairing. If you fall in love with a 20 inch upholstered stool, pair it with a 31 inch table; put it under a 28 inch table and your knees hit the apron.
Vanity table height in detail
Most makeup vanities are built at desk height, 29 to 30 inches (74 to 76 cm). Antique and vintage dressing tables run lower, often 27 to 28 inches, because they were made for a lower seated posture; they are still comfortable if the stool is 17 to 18 inches. Tall people, or anyone who also uses the vanity as a desk for a laptop, are happier at 30 to 31 inches.
Check how the storage is arranged. A centre drawer under the tabletop steals 3 to 4 inches of knee room. Vanities with drawers only on the sides, or a lift-top centre section, keep the full 9 to 12 inches of clearance.
Stool height and why it is not a dining chair
A vanity stool sits at 18 to 20 inches (46 to 51 cm), about the same as a dining chair, but it is shorter in depth (15 to 17 inches) so you can sit close to the mirror and swivel out easily. Backless stools tuck fully under the table in a small bedroom; a low back is kinder for a 20 minute routine. Measure the clear width between the vanity legs or drawer banks before you buy a stool: a 20 inch wide stool will not slide under a 24 inch opening if the legs splay.
How wide should a makeup vanity be?
| Vanity width | Fits | Typical depth |
|---|---|---|
| 24 to 32 in (61 to 81 cm) | One person, compact; a mirror and a tray of essentials | 14 to 16 in (36 to 41 cm) |
| 36 to 42 in (91 to 107 cm) | One person with storage drawers each side (the most common size) | 16 to 18 in (41 to 46 cm) |
| 48 to 55 in (122 to 140 cm) | One person with a full tabletop mirror and lighting, or a shared vanity in a pinch | 18 to 20 in (46 to 51 cm) |
| 60 in and up (152 cm+) | Two people side by side with their own mirrors | 20 to 22 in (51 to 56 cm) |
Depth is easy to overlook. Anything under 14 inches cannot hold a freestanding mirror and your elbows at the same time. If the vanity sits against a wall and the mirror is wall-mounted, 16 inches is plenty; if the mirror stands on the table, allow 18 inches or more.
Mirror placement and size
Sit on the stool and have someone mark the wall at your eye level. That mark should be the centre of the mirror, usually 44 to 48 inches (112 to 122 cm) from the floor. A mirror 20 to 30 inches tall and roughly two thirds the width of the vanity looks balanced. Tabletop mirrors should bring the reflective centre to the same height: a 30 inch table needs a mirror whose centre sits 14 to 18 inches above the surface. Tilting mirrors forgive an inch or two either way.
Where to put the vanity
- Side-on to a window, so daylight hits your face from the side rather than from behind you (which silhouettes you) or directly in front (which bounces glare off the mirror).
- Allow 30 inches (76 cm) behind the stool to pull it out and sit down; 36 inches if it is a walkway.
- A corner vanity saves floor space but needs its own light; corners are the darkest part of any bedroom.
- In a shared bedroom, the vanity doubles as a desk. Pick a 30 inch height and a stool that is comfortable for an hour, not ten minutes.
Lighting the vanity
Makeup lighting should be even and from the front. Two sconces or vertical LED bars at face height either side of the mirror are better than one fixture above it, which casts shadows under the eyes. Choose bulbs in the 3000K to 4000K range with a high colour rendering index (CRI 90+) so colours read true; cool daylight bulbs above 5000K make skin look grey indoors. Vanities with built-in mirror lighting handle this for you; see our makeup vanities with lights. For the room around it, our bedroom lighting ideas covers layering.
Frequently asked questions
What is the standard height of a makeup vanity?
28 to 31 inches (71 to 79 cm), with 29 to 30 inches the most common. Vintage dressing tables often sit at 27 to 28 inches.
What height should a vanity stool be?
18 to 20 inches (46 to 51 cm) to the top of the cushion, leaving 9 to 12 inches of clearance under the table.
Can I use a desk as a makeup vanity?
Yes, a desk is the same height. Add a tabletop mirror with its centre 14 to 18 inches above the surface and front-facing light, and keep the drawers from blocking your knees.
How wide should a vanity be for two people?
60 inches (152 cm) or wider, with a mirror for each seat. Anything narrower works only if you take turns.
How high should the vanity mirror hang?
Centre it at seated eye level, usually 44 to 48 inches (112 to 122 cm) from the floor. Sit on the stool and mark the wall rather than guessing.
Which bulbs are best for applying makeup?
3000K to 4000K with CRI 90 or higher, placed at face height on both sides of the mirror.
Pick the table height first, the stool to match, then the mirror to your eye line. See our full range of makeup vanities and vanity stools.
