Nightstand & Side Table Height Guide

Nightstand and Side Table Height Guide

Both pieces follow the same principle and almost everyone measures the wrong thing.

Nightstands: match the mattress, not the frame

Measure from the floor to the top of your mattress - not the top of the bed frame or headboard. Your nightstand should land within 2 to 4 inches of that number, ideally level or an inch below.

Most mattresses sit 24 to 26 inches off the floor, which is why most nightstands are 24 to 28 inches tall. But a platform bed with a thin mattress can sit as low as 18 inches, and a pillow-top on a tall frame can reach 32. Measure yours. Too tall and you knock things off reaching for your phone in the dark. Too short and you cannot reach it at all.

Width: leave two inches of clearance

Leave at least 2 inches between the bed and the nightstand so bedding does not drag. In a tight room, a narrow 16-inch nightstand or a wall-mounted floating one keeps the walkway clear.

Side tables: level with the sofa arm

The same logic applies in the living room, with the arm replacing the mattress. Measure from the floor to the top of the sofa arm - usually 22 to 26 inches - and pick a table within a couple of inches.

Material matters more here than in a bedroom because the table sits in your eyeline. Marble reflects light instead of absorbing it, so a stone-topped table makes a dark corner read brighter without adding a lamp. See marble side tables in round, square and C-shaped designs.

When a C-shaped table is the right answer

If your sofa sits against a wall and there is no room beside it, a C-shaped table slides its base under the sofa and cantilevers the top over your lap. It is the only shape that gives you a surface without taking floor space. Height matters more here than anywhere else - it has to clear the sofa base and land at arm height. Check the base clearance against your sofa's floor gap before ordering.

Colour: black disappears, marble stands out

A black side table recedes into the room, which is useful when the sofa or rug is already doing the talking. A marble one becomes a focal point. Pick based on what else is in the room, not on the table alone. See black side tables in metal, wood and marble.
